THIS MONTH’S THEME IS “READY FOR SCHOOL”

Last month’s theme, summer fun, was loads of fun for everyone. We played many games, read tons of books, sang a variety of songs in English and Chinese, performed science projects, and interacted with the projector for story time and dancing. We also integrated more Chinese into our learning curriculum; all of the children enjoyed it!

Our learning through play will continue to progress throughout our daily activities. The children will continue to build on new skills daily; please continue encouraging them to practice these skills at home. One of our goals is to motivate children to want to read so they will practice reading independently and become fluent readers. We do so by providing them with a literacy rich environment: reading aloud to them, talking about story books, and encouraging them to tell/retell stories throughout the day. As they listen to and talk about story books or retell stories, they gain an understanding of sequence, character development, and causal relationships. When children are engaged literacy learners, they are laying the foundation for becoming capable readers and writers in school.

Our daily art work will include gluing, coloring, painting and cutting. This is one way for children to express themselves creatively. Along with creative art projects, we will be dancing and singing to songs.

This month, children will explore with scientific tools often used by scientists to provide them experience with the tools they will be using throughout the year for our science projects and investigations. Children will compare the methods, observations, and results. They will be encouraged to describe observations in front of their teachers and peers (keywords: measuring tape, measuring cup, ruler, graduated cylinder, dropper, magnifying glasses, microscope, thermometer, balance scale, weight…)

Making slime:

  1. Ask children open-ended questions about how they think we are going to make slime? What ingredients do they think we will need?
  2. Go through step by step instructions of how to make the slime.
  3. Children then create the slime and play with it, then put it in a bag to take home and share with family.

ENRICHMENTS FOR THE MONTH:

  1. Read and memorize Chinese poems –“Count the Number of Fingers”, “The Months”, “I Am Going to School”, “After School”, present them in front of everyone (practice public speaking).
  2. Learn and Write Chinese Characters: numbers 1-10, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, and body parts.

FRIENDLY REMINDER:

We will be closed on Monday, September 7 for Labor Day. Happy Labor Day!

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Social development refers to a child’s ability to create and sustain meaningful relationships with adults and other children. Emotional development refers to a child’s ability to express, recognize, and manage their own emotions as well as respond appropriately to others’ emotions.

As children observe and interact with familiar adults and peers, they begin to learn how to express and interpret a broad range of emotions. Social and emotional development goes hand-in-hand in the early years.

By participating in familiar activities and routines, children develop a sense of belonging and gain self-confidence.

Positive social and emotional development in the early years provides a critical foundation for lifelong development and learning.
