Golden Bay Preschool Newsletter–April 2021
(4-5 year old classroom)
January 2021 to April 2021 Recap:
For the month of January, our themes of learning were winter and MLK where we learned about the colder weather, animals that live in the snow and dreams as mentioned in MLK’s speech. From these themes, we introduced new concepts like hibernation and dreams. We sang various songs and read many books to get ready for the winter season. The Chinese poem we learned this month was “Sympathy for the Peasants 悯农诗—李绅”.
For the month of February, we focused on the themes of Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, Black History Month, and Dental health. With the Lunar New Year, children sang many Lunar New Year songs in Chinese, crafted many art pieces with Lunar New Year touches, and read lots of books to learn more about the holiday to bring prosperity, happy spirits, and bright energy. Love filled the classrooms as the children decorated Valentine’s Day cards and dyed flowers with bright colours. As February is national dental health month, we explored the effects of sugary drinks and foods and daily teeth brushing to promote awareness on the importance of oral health. For Black History Month, we learned about a few influential black figures like Garrett Morgan and George Sampson and their impacts on our society. The Chinese poem we learned this month was “Quiet Night Thought 静夜思—李白”.
For the month of March, our focus was on modes of transportation and St. Patrick’s Day. Throughout the month, we read many books and sang many songs about different vehicles like cars, trucks, boats, etc. and learned the purpose of each one. We explored colours in a few of our STEM activities using Skittles. The children got into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit by wearing green and creating shamrock art. The Chinese poem we learned this month was “Song for the Goose 咏鹅—骆宾王”.
For the month of April, we are spending more time in the warm weather outdoors where the children will have more time to run around and observe the plants and flowers grow in our garden. We talk about the various plants we are growing like tomatoes, avocados, kumquats, blueberries, grapes, and flowers. Every day during outside time, the children get to water the plants and observe them grow. We are also talking about compost: the process of composting and the ways it is beneficial. We will continue to learn new Chinese poems: “The Color of Spring 春天的颜色” and “A Spring Morning 春晓—孟浩然”.
Music enrichment class will continue on Thursdays.
